Alexander Peters trained as a dancer in central Pennsylvania and later at the School of American Ballet in New York. Peters has since performed as a principal dancer on stages across the United States and internationally for the last decade with notable companies including Miami City Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, and Kansas City Ballet. He is a recipient of a Princess Grace Award and the Mae L. Wien Award and has been critically acclaimed in many publications including the New York Times. A newcomer to painting, he has spent the last several years cultivating his style and craft. His foray into painting coincided with the departure of his husband to attend medical school in Philadelphia. Looking for a way to pass time in these newfound periods of solitude, he took up painting which filled a void and provided a new sense of artistic sustenance. Inspired by color and the materials at hand, Peters’ work develops over time, allowing the mediums to naturally create shapes, forms and textures through the layering of paint. His background, which is strongly rooted in dance and stage work has also influenced his other artistic endeavors. A common theme throughout his work explores how objects and colors occupy space and relate to one another, like dancers on a stage. Most recently, his first solo exhibition titled In the Waking Hour was presented at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens featuring 25 new works.
